Walnuts Recalled Over Outbreak of E. coli Infections, Health Officials Warn

Walnut Recall: E. coli Outbreak Prompts Public Health Warning

Gibson Farms Inc., a California-based company, has issued a recall of organic shelled walnut halves and pieces due to their potential contamination with E. coli bacteria, posing a significant public health risk. The recalled walnuts have been linked to an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections, primarily concentrated in western states. Health officials urge consumers to exercise caution and take immediate action to avoid exposure to the contaminated product.

The affected walnuts were distributed primarily through natural food stores and co-ops in the following states:

  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Kansas
  • Louisiana
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • Nevada
  • Oregon
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Washington
  • Wyoming

As of April 30, 2024, health officials have confirmed 12 cases of E. coli O157:H7 infections associated with the consumption of the recalled walnuts. Seven of these patients have required hospitalization, and two have developed acute kidney failure, a serious complication of E. coli infection. Interviews with patients have revealed that all 10 individuals who reported their dietary history prior to illness had consumed walnuts.

Recall Details and Instructions for Consumers

Gibson Farms Inc. has issued a comprehensive recall of organic shelled walnut halves and pieces sold in bulk boxes in 25-pound quantities. The recalled walnuts can be identified by their lot numbers: 3325-043 and 3341-501, with expiration dates of 5/21/25 and 6/7/25, respectively.

Consumers who have purchased walnuts that match these criteria are strongly advised to discard them immediately. If the source of the walnuts is uncertain, they should also be discarded as a precautionary measure. The FDA is actively investigating the distribution channels to determine the specific stores that received the affected product. Some stores may have repackaged the bulk walnuts into plastic clamshells or bags, potentially complicating the identification process.

Health Risks Associated with E. coli Infections

E. coli infections can cause a range of symptoms, including severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and fever. While most individuals recover within a week, some cases can progress to life-threatening complications, including kidney failure (hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS) and neurological damage. HUS is particularly concerning for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Consumers who experience any symptoms of E. coli infection after consuming walnuts should seek medical attention immediately and inform their doctor about their potential exposure to the bacteria. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimize the risk of complications.
